.1 Theoretical Foundations and Epistemological Grounding This stage draws upon a multi-disciplinary theoretical framework whose constituent approaches converge in affirming the centrality of narrative construction in shaping and reshaping identity. The following sections elaborate on these foundations: A. Narrative Therapy This approach was founded by Michael White and David Epston (White & Epston, 1990) and proceeds from the axiom that human identity is constituted through the 'stories' an individual constructs about the self. These stories are not reducible to a neutral chronicle of events; rather, they form the semantic scaffolding that confers meaning upon experiences and positions the self in relation to them. Narrative therapy assists the patient in deconstructing the 'Dominant Stories' that narrow the space of lived possibilities, with the aim of constructing 'Alternative Stories' that open wider horizons of existential freedom and growth.
